Former UBS banker, Bradley Birkenfeld was awarded $104 million under the IRS whistleblower provisions. In 2007 Birkenfeld, turned whistleblower, reported to the IRS the techniques that UBS used to help clients set up off shore accounts and defraud the IRS. Birkenfeld pleaded guilty to conspiracy in 2008 and received a 40 month prison term. The whistleblower award was not related to the matters in his own case but to tax evasion of others.
