Today in Legal History: Gaither Report Presented to President Eisenhower
The Gaither Report was titled “Deterrence & Survival in the Nuclear Age.” President Eisenhower had asked for a report on fallout and blast shelters. The report, prepared by primarily civilians, recommended a large system of shelters to be built across the United States, but stressed the need for more offensive capability.
This report was presented to Eisenhower on November 7, 1957, very shortly after the launch of Sputnik. It is believed that the Gaither Report contributed to the nuclear buildup by the US in the late 20th Century.
