Check it Out: Snow Falling on Cedars

This film version of David Guterson’s novel depicts the murder trial of Kazuo Miyamoto (Rick Yune), a young Japanese-American who is accused of murdering a fisherman on his boat off the coast of San Piedro Island, north of the Puget Sound. The majority of the film is told from the point of view of Ishmael Chambers (Ethan Hawke), a reporter covering the murder trial, who is having trouble being objective because Kazuo’s wife turns out to be his ex-lover. The film follows the book’s flashback structure, which may not be as easy to follow in the film as it is in the book, but the beautifully shot scenes make up for any faults the story line may have.
